Hey Cyle,

It's gratifying to hear that you're still working your the 4chan concentrator, especially that it's found other venues. I've learned a load about Proce55ing since the class, and I'm looking forward to exercising the option.

Glad you're still out there,
-Doug

I'm not debating the potential practical uses of Twitter, I tried to point out that those points are not reliant on Twitter. It is, as you say, just micro-blogging. What I'm trying to do is narrowly examine what is special about Twitter rather than Tumblr, for example.

The problem is not twitter, the problem is what some people use it for. Used correctly, twitter is good for:

Getting quick informative updates, like where somebody will be speaking and when
Having one place where you can see anytime any of your favorite blogs has a new entry
Disseminating information about a product or company that consumers should know about
For yourself - to keep a journal of your activities so you can refer back to it later incase you need to remember when you did something

There are many productive and useful ways to use twitter. Basically, it's MICRO BLOGGING. It's the same thing you're doing here, but it mercifully allows much less space. Do you understand? It's how you use it. Don't let the fuck-tards get you down.

Hai there,

Found your article through googling "4chan image mining".

I too am very interested in 4chan. To me it symbolizes the raw unprocessed core of the internet and I think it has definite cultural significance. It is interesting to see new memes there, some dying without taking flight but some of which bubble up into the mainstream's consciousness - which in the end can be translated to business. For example 4chan could be a very useful place for someone in the content/marketing industry to do research in, get some fresh ideas. In any case, it is always good for a laugh, often at its own expense, on several levels.

I would be very interested in your utility as I was toying with the idea myself but don't have much time to make one. I think such a program could provide endless entertainment. In addition, I was thinking it would be neat to have some crawler that would semantically analyze 4chan and report various trends for example memes and other user behaviours. This could be very interesting and probably usefull as well.

Just some ideas...

Later and good luck with your research.

Hey Cyle I find this project deeply interesting, especially the memetics aspect. Memes presumably need hosts that are ready to bear & share them, and I wonder just what proportion of society finds humor in things like goatse (a proud minority!). You make a good point that there are big shifts in censorship and cultural norms, but perhaps there will always exist a realm for the unthinkable and other taboo violating memes, only seeing light in liminal places such as 4chan, Totse, and other corners of the internet. Until now these kinds of memes could only transmit through whispers but today the internet provides an unprecedented opportunity for meme transmission like a meme pandemic. No matter what the transmission will be regulated by the proportion of people willing to host, although maybe ideas of what is palatable will be in constant flux due to the moral experimentation boiling up from below. Another thing to ponder over is human disgust. It appears that there are things that universally disgusting to people all over the world, suggesting that they're embedded in human nature through the evolutionary process. Although nature can succumb to nurture, and through repeated exposure people can become desensitized to the shit, rendering it morally benign. In the end I think that no matter what the norms become, there'll always be the unorthodox pushing the envolope, creating a stir like a wave-machine... And I'm fuckin happy to witness it all as it happens. And from the sounds of it, places like 4chan is a great place to do it. The image scrubber is a great idea, what an awesome way to thrust the undergound into the mainstream. If there's any way at all that I could collaborate with you in terms of the anthropological part of the project, please let me know!
